A note to Apple regarding the App Store

15.11.09

Yesterday it was announced that the Apple App Store now has over 100,000 applications available to download.  That's an insane number and more than likely only about 10% of them actually sell with any strong numbers.  The point is though that you can, literally, find any app for anything.

My problem is that searching the App Store is a beat down.  There is no real way to search by keyword effectively or find all the shiny new stuff.  Sure you have the New section when you first open up the App Store but the reality is it is often out of date.  In fact I have found the App Store app on my iPhone is more current than iTunes!

So Apple, you have a great ecosystem here but it needs a bit of help.  Develop the search function a bit better in the App Store so we can find what we are really looking for in it.

Review of the NASA App for iPhone

15.11.09

One of my fondest childhood memories happened on April 21, 1981.  That was the launch of STS-1, the first Space Shuttle mission in NASA history.  I remember it because it was the first significant space event in my life (I don't really remember Apollo-Soyuz in the mid-70s) and my parents actually let me stay home from school so I could watch the launch live.  I've been fascinated with NASA and the United States space program since I can remember and as an adult, this has changed very little.  Thankfully there is a great application for iPhone and iPod Touch users directly from NASA that allows you to keep up not only with the Shuttle program but every major mission that the space agency has going on it.  Best of all it's free!  If you are interested in human space travel like me, the NASA app for iPhone is a no-brainer to go and get.

Review of ZAGAT To Go 09 for iPhone

15.11.09

I live in an area that has nearly 300 hundred restaurants in a 10 square mile area. 300! Finding which one to go to even in my own town is difficult at best and I can't imagine how visitors must feel. It can be overwhelming. I get that same overwhelming feeling when I'm traveling to a new city and don't know where a good place is to eat near me. ZAGAT has been the standard for many years on selecting restaurants for service, decor, service and cost. Now that same detailed information is available to you on your iPhone thanks to the folks at Handmark. They have released the ZAGAT To Go '09 application for iPhone and it is a must if you are looking for a solid recommendation for a restaurant, nightlife or hotel near you. The ZAGAT application takes full advantage of the iPhone's locator service, pinpointing places to eat, party and stay close to you. And because it is from ZAGAT, you know it can be trusted. At only $9.99, this is a must have application for the foodie or the traveler.

Exclusive Fictionwise Discount for ClintonFitch.com readers

15.11.09

The team over at Fictionwise has extended a great offer to readers of ClintonFitch.com.  Now through November 30th you can save 25% off your entire order when you use the coupon code clintonfitch25.

Fictionwise offers a great number of e-books, most of which are available in multiple formats including the Kindle.  They also have a great selection of hard-to-find items as well as current best sellers.

They also have one of the best customer loyalty programs out there in my opinion.  MicroPay Rebates works by giving you a credit, up to 100% of the purchase price, toward future purchases.  For example, right now at Fictionwise, all of the eBooks on The New York Times Best Sellers list have 100% Micropay Rebate.  So if you buy Dan Brown's Lost Symbol for $20, you get a $20 credit in your MicroPay account.  Pretty cool eh?  In addition, they also offer a more traditional book club, Bookwise, which saves you 15% off each eBook for the length of your membership.  That 15% is on top of any other discounts, promotions or coupons.

Fictionwise has over 72,000 titles - they should have you covered!

TweetDeck for iPhone updated

15.11.09

TweetDeck has released a new version of the iPhone version of there popular Twitter application.

The new 1.1.1 version includes a long list of new features including the ability to integrate with Facebook, a nearby tweet column (so you can see those who use TweetDeck near you), landscape composing of tweets and many other improvements and fixes.  This version in my opinion is much closer to their desktop version - which I use and like.

The best news, TweetDeck is free!

Urbanspoon for Blackberry released

15.11.09

Urbanspoon has released their ever popular iPhone application for Blackberry.  The application allows you to find restaurants near you using the classic "slot machine" style of Urbanspoon.  You can also select by neighborhood, cuisine or price to do a more refined search or simply shake your Blackberry Storm and it will come up with something random.

The app works on other Blackberry's but the Storm is the only one that supports the random shaking.

The app is free - go to http://www.urbanspoon.com/blackberry from your BlackBerry browser to download.

Review of Rock Band for iPhone

15.11.09

Rock Band has become one of the most popular games available for any gaming platform.  The Electronic Arts franchise is available on every popular game console out there - XBox, Playstation and Wii - and last month became available for iPhone and iPod Touch users.  The game, which allows you to play there different instruments or sing vocals in a band, provides a rich experience even on the smaller iPhone platform.  Controls are similar to that of the console versions of the game making it a quick learn for those who already play Rock Band.  Couple this with an ever growing online community of Rock Band iPhone users, downloadable songs and the ability to play multiplayer with those online or other iPhone users near you who have the game and you have a game that will keep you occupied for hours - just like the console version.
